Nevermore review

Nevermore
Kelly Creagh
August 31st 2010
Athenum
Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she is paired with Varen Nethers for an English project, which is due—so unfair—on the day of the rival game. Cold and aloof, sardonic and sharp-tongued, Varen makes it clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her either. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give this enigmatic boy with the piercing eyes another look.

Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life.

As her world begins to unravel around her, Isobel discovers that dreams, like words, hold more power than she ever imagined, and that the most frightening realities are those of the mind. Now she must find a way to reach Varen before he is consumed by the shadows of his own nightmares.

His life depends on it. (goodreads)

I put off reading Nevermore for ages, purely for the fact that it was over 500 pages long, and I'm generally intimidated by long books. Seriously, they scare me. But Nevermore was amazing! I was literally blown away at how good it was.

Nevermore breathed new life into Poe's stories and I think it will do well to get other people who had little knowledge of who he was into Poe, and it certainly gave me information about his personal life, which I knew nothing about. Another thing I loved about this book was the writing. I'm not usually a fan of third person. I like to get really into the main characters head, but Kelly's slightly quirky writing style really got me into the story.

Isobel is the type of character who I wouldn't usually like, but she developed so well that I couldn't help but like her by the end, or at least feel a bit sorry for her. And Varen was not your typical YA love interest, being that he generally despised Isobel until their English project. Well, neither of them liked each other, which is another I love Nevermore for. It was so great to watch their love for each other develop like it would in real life, and that in their developing love, they changed as characters too.

I felt really bad for Varen. I wanted to give him a hug for the majority of the book. And then punch his dad. I could've punched a few characters in this book, really, but only the ones that were meant to be disliked. I loved Gwen! She would definitely be my friend. I loved her quirkiness, and that she never got embarrassed at anything. Gwen rocked. :)

The plot was so interesting, and the Dreamworld created in the book was so imaginative, I loved it. I would never want to actually go to the Dreamworld, mind. It sounds pretty damn terrifying, but it made a good setting for a story. And I was glad that the only Poe stories that were heavily involved with the plot were the ones that I'd read.

Nevermore is a book really worth picking up, it was fab! A great read, especially if your interested in Poe, or want to be. One of my favourite reads of the year, and I'm glad it was the last book I read in 2010. I think I might die not knowing what happens next though! (hurry up 2012!)  5 stars :D

Follow Friday (13)

Yay! It's Follow Friday time! This week Parajunkee asked

What are you New Years blogger resolutions?

1. To get my reviews in check! I have a pretty bad and disorganised reviewing system, and my reviews have been pretty erratic lately, so I need to get my act together.

2. To read all the books I buy. So I know this isn't strictly a blog resolution, but since I've started the blog, I've been buying a lot more books, and not reading as many of them. So to read more!

3. Comment more on other people's blogs. One of the reasons I started blogging was to make blog friends with other people who love books. How is that going to happen if I don't actually talk to anyone? Also I'm a blog stalker, and I want to let you guys know that I'm an avid reader of your blogs. :)

. To try and make a couple of vlogs. I've always wanted to make a vlog but I didn't have a camera. Now I do there will be no more excuses! I will try and make a clog at some point over the year! As soon as I can get over talking to a camera without looking like an awkward chump.

5. To not make promises on my blog if I can't keep them. I'm always saying stuff on my blog, and a lot of the time I don't follow through (I know, that sucks). So  yes, to only say something on the blog if I can actuallly make happen!

6. More original posts! Pretty much everything I post on here is a meme, and I don't like that either. I just need to think of something to post about first... Any ideas? :D

Those are my blogger resolutions! What are some of yours?

Waiting on Wednesday #13

                                                        Across The Universe
Beth Revis
January 11th 2011

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone--one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship--tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

I cannot wait for this book. A sci-fi murder mystery for people who don't like sci-fi? Sounds right up my street, even though I like sci-fi already.

What are you waiting for?

Top Ten Tuesday: Best Books of 2010

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted and created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week we're talking about our favourites for 2010, so without further ado (and in no particular order) here are some of my favourite  reads of 2010!

1. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.  This book was just so funny and different, and I just couldn't help but love it. Evie was definitely one of my favourite characters of the year as well.

2.Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. I am still so in love with this book. It is so sweet and  charming, and I've yet to find a person who didn't like it.

3.  Nevermore by Kelly Creagh. I know it says I'm still reading it, but I finished it this morning (I'll post a review this Thursday) and it was so brilliant, inventive, and even though it got slightly confusing at the end, I am waiting impatiently for book 2.

4. The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins  I read the Hunger Games this year, (I know, I know) and the series literally blew me away. I hadn't read a book like that in forever, and I think I've leant it to at least 1,00 people since (okay, maybe a slight exaggeration). They were just that awesome.

5. Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. I really enjoyed this book, despite the fact that so many people seemed to despise it. I thought it was really good, and those last 100 pages were great.

6.  The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. I love this series so so much. I love Ash and Grim (I want a Grim t-shirt. That would rock.) and I love the whole concept of the Iron Fey. Definitely one of my favourite Faery reads.

7. Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton. I wasn't going to put this on the list because it comes out next year, but this book was awesome, and I want my own Will.

8. Firelight by Sophie Jordan. One word: Dragons (well, Draki, if you want to get into specifics...)

9. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. I love the Victorians, I love London, and I love steampunk-esque things, Clockwork Angel is practically the perfect book for me.

10.Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles.  Even though this book did get slightly cheesy at the odd part, I still adored it and Alex and Brittany are such a good couple. It's almost impossible not to love them.

WINNER! :D

As the title would suggest, it is time to announce the winner of my first ever giveaway. But before I do, I would just like to say that I want to thank you all for following me and commenting on my posts and taking the time to read them. I am ridiculously thankful and grateful for you all. I hope you had the most amazing Christmas and have an amazingly fantastic 2011, and for all of you who didn't win, I'm sorry, if I could give you all something I would, but for now you'll just have to make do with my love and appreciation. (Okay, that sounded WAY more formal than I intended it too... but you understand right. And that last sentence wasn't meant to sound as creepy as I think it does... ;p)

The winner is:

Congrats to you, Spav! I'll email you confirming your book choice and whatnot, but don't worry the rest of you! There will be more giveaways on the blog, because it's a lot of fun! I thoroughly enjoyed hosting this giveaway, as it finally gave me a chance to give back a bit to all of my loverly followers (and no, loverly was not a spelling mistake, in case you were wondering. :D)

Thank you! :D

Follow Friday (12)

Yay! It's Follow Friday time! This week Parajunkee asked

What are you doing for Christmas?

Well, this year I'm going to my Dad's house for the first time (Not the first time ever, but for Christmas.)
And we had a mini Chrismas at my Mum's house yesterday, opening all our presents from her and watching a film (Christmas Eve tradition of ours, or Christmas Eve Eve in this case)
So, yeah, not really doing much on actual Christmas.
What are you doing on Christmas this year?

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!

Hex Hall review

Hex Hall
Rachel Hawkins
March 2nd 2010
Disney Hyperion (US)/ Simon and Schuster (UK)

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her. (Goodreads)

< UK cover.
When I first picked up Hex Hall, I will admit that I was a little bit wary. First of all, the UK cover is slightly horrendous. It doesn't even have anything to do with the book. ONE character looks a little bit like one of the girls on the cover, and even then, she's a minor character. I mean, Sophie isn't even blonde, and the uniforms don't even look like that. I know this isn't the authors fault, and it shouldn't put me off reading the book, but look at it. Blegh. (In my opinion, of course.)

But, as soon as I was done with the first page of Hex Hall, I knew I was going to love it. Hex Hall is an immensely fun and entertaining read that I would happily read through again.

One of the things I loved most about Hex Hall was Sophie (If I didn't like the MC I guess there would be a bit of a problem...) I think Sophie is probably one of my favourite characters out of most of the books I read this year. I would want to be friends with her. She's funny, pretty self-confident, smart and a super powerful 'witch' (I use the word Witch lightly. I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't read it,) even if she doesn't know it. I loved most of the characters in this book, except for Elodie, Chaston and Anna, because, to me, they did seem like stereotypical mean girls, even though Elodie became half acceptable by the end. And also, Archer. Despite his hot 'n' coldness, I still love him. I need book 2 NOW!

Hex Hall was also a lot more twisty-turny than I expected. If I hadn't read the blurb for Demonglass (note to self: DO NOT read the blurbs of sequels to books you have not read, if you have the intent to read them) then I definitely wouldn't have seem the twists coming. Yes, twists, plural.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of Demonglass, and I feel like an idiot for putting off reading this for so long. A funny, fast-paced, magical read which is definitely worth checking out. 4.5 stars :)

Waiting on Wednesday #12

Demonglass
Rachel Hawkins
February 15th

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.

That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

I'm nearly at the end of Hex Hall, and I really like it. It's funny and light-hearted and it has witchy goodness, and I really can't wait until the next one. Is it February yet?

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Hope Santa Brings

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted and created by The Broke and the Bookish. This weeks topic is top ten books I hope Santa brings.

1 The entire Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. So I know this isn't one book, but I really need to hop on the VA bandwagon. I just haven't picked them up already because I'm not a big fan of the covers (I know, I know, but I  can't help it! I have to be physically attracted to a book to want to read it...)

2. Nevermore by Kelly Creagh.  I really like Edgar Allen Poe, and add that to all the excellent reviews this book has got, it really makes me want to read it. It sounds awesome!

3. The Duff by Kody Keplinger. I have been wanting to read this book since before it came out (I'm a big YA rebel fan) but I still haven't got a chance to. I've heard some pretty good things about it as well.

4. The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff. Again, I've been wanting to read this for ages, but It's not out in the UK until early January (Santa, if you're reading this, please please get me the pretty US hard cover. I don't like the UK cover as much.)

5.  Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow. Somebody told me Dru was kick-butt. This made me want to read it.

6. Angl by L.A. Weatherly. I've heard some pretty good things about this book, and with all the goodies I got for it this week, I should probably get to reading it.

6. Leviathan by Scott Westerfield. I've been wanting to read this for a while now. I really like steampunk, and I've read some really good things about it.

7. Soulless by Gail Carriger. This book sounds really entertaining. Funny, Supernatural, Victorian London and Parasols. Looks like an interesting read.

8. Forget You by Jennifer Echols. I've been wanting to read this since it came out, but again I don't really like the cover (I'm quite terrible, aren't I...) But it sounds great.

9. Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles. I loved Perfect Chemistry. I need to read this book.

10.Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantesky. I really enjoyed Jessica's Guide, and I really want to read this one because it sounds really interesting (I really need to find a better word to use than interesting....) And again, I've been putting it off becasue I'm not the biggest fan of the cover...

Angelfire review

Angelfire
Courtney Allison Moulton
15th February 2011
This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember. (goodreads)

I received this book for review courtesy of Netgalley and Harperteen. (And I love them for it :D)

I loved this book. I know I love a lot of books, but this book was awesome. No, not just awesome, this book was Bad-Ass. Completely, totally and utterly Bad. Ass. And I loved it so much for that, because I haven't read a bad-ass book in a long time.

Ellie was awesome, because despite the fact she was kick-butt, she was so human (which did remind me a bit of Buffy, but please, that is a high compliment from me. When I start making comparisons with Buffy, that equals high levels of awesome.[and by this, I don't mean the plot, I mean Ellie's character was slightly reminiscent of Bufy, in a good way] I'm going to stop digging a hole for myself now...) In the book it is revealed that Ellie is the Preliator, the warrior, who fights and kills all of these monsters called Reapers, with the aid of Will, who I will fangirl about later. I could completely relate to her in the way that she didn't want to do this, she didn't want to be the Preliator. Her reasons to be upset were valid, but at the same time, I would be quite happy if I woke up one morning, a pretty man came up to me and said he was my guardian, and it was revealed that I could suddenly kick butt. That sounds pretty awesome to me. But the nightmares and the constant dying kind of detract from that, I guess. That would be pretty scary. (also, on a pretty unrelated note, despite the fact her dad was a bit of a meany [I have my suspicions about why] her Mom was actually there for her, unlike most of the absent parents in YA fiction. Just wanted to throw that in there ;D)

The Reaper society and hierarchy was really well done, and I became really interested in how the Reaper world functioned and worked, and that there were several different types of Reaper, varying from the chilling Vir to the brutal and uncompromising strength of the Ursids, which I thought was really interesting, and I'm eager to learn more about them in the next two books.

Will. I seriously love Will. He is so sweet, strong, handsome, amazing, you get the point. He's just so swoonworthy, but alas, I cannot love him, because he's Ellie's. And that ending! I'm backing Ellie and Will to get together all the way. If they don't, I will be so annoyed. They're so good together!

There was so much action in this book, and I loved every minute of it. There really aren't enough kick-butt chicks in YA, apart from Katniss and Katsa, of course, and it's a shame, because I think it's awesome. Don't get me wrong, it's all good and well when a dashing man jumps in and saves the damsel, but it can get a bit tiring to constantly read about these wet sappy little girls who don't have a clue how to stick up for them selves. And I want myself a pair of Khopesh swords, because they're so great. Seriously, I mean they have gut hooks and everything. Also, I liked that it wasn't afraid to be gory. There was that bit with the fight with Ragnuk, where half his face had been practically burned off. It was gross, but I loved it all the same (that sounds weird...)

Overall, this book was SO GOOD. And I'm so happy that I got it off netgalley, but now it means I have to wait even longer to read book 2, Wings of the Wicked (I love that title, by the way) which is going to be awesome. And the ending it so good as well! As I've said. Totally Bad-ass. I loved it. When it comes out, read it. Seriously. It's kick-butt. 5 stars :D

Book Blogger Hop/Follow Friday (11)

In the spirit of the Twitter Friday Follow, the Book Blogger Hop  is a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and find new book-related blogs that we may be missing out on! This weekly BOOK PARTY is an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books! It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs that they may not know existed!

Each week, participating blogs are asked questions to post and answer on their websites.

This week's question comes from Alex who blogs at Geek on the Brink:
"What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?

Hmmm, well definitely the plot when I'm first hearing of a book, but when I'm actually reading a book, it just depends... If I'm reading a more contemporary novel, I look more closely at the characters, and in a fantasy/paranormal/whatever else, I look more at plot, but that doesn't mean to say that they don't have both! I think that they're both as important as each other.

Carmel is studying web design... What did you study in college, or are currently studying and did it lead to your current 9 to 5 or are you doing something totally different?

Umm... I'm still in High school... But there I'm doing music, history, graphics (as well as english, science, maths, R.E, but we don't get a choice about those.) I think I'm probably going to end up doing something completely different.~

The Lost Saint
Bree Despain
December 28

The non-stop sequel to The Dark Divine delivers an even hotter romance and more thrilling action than Bree Despain's first novel.  Grace Divine made the ultimate sacrifice to cure Daniel Kalbi.  She gave her soul to the wolf to save him and lost her beloved mother.  When Grace receives a haunting phone call from Jude, she knows what she must do.  She must become a Hound of Heaven.  Desparate to find Jude, Grace befriends Talbot - a newcomer to town who promises her that he can help her be a hero.  But as the two grow closer, the wolf grows in Grace, and her relationship with Daniel begins to crumble.  Unaware of the dark path she is walking, Grace becomes prideful in her new abilities - not realizing that an old enemy has returned and deadly trap is about to be sprung.  Readers, raveous for more Grace and Daniel, will be itching to sink their teeth into The Lost Saint. I really enjoyed The Dark Divine, so I'm really looking forward to where the story will go, and what will happen to Grace and Daniel.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I'm Anticipating For 2011

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted and created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This weeks Top Ten Tuesday is for our most anticipated 2011 releases, which is going to be stupidly hard, but here goes : ) Also, this my first week doing a Top Ten post. i thought it would be fun :D

1. Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton. Ever since I saw the picture of Will on her blog, I knew I had to have it. I like fictional people called Will a lot (Clockwork Angel, Firelight.) Also, Ellie kicks butt, which automatically makes this book awesome.

2. Across The Universe by Beth Revis. Umm, it's a sci-fi novel. For teens. I'm there. I mean, c'mon, there's a map of a spaceship in the front, and it has a reversible cover. I would buy this just for the awesome cover reversibleness.

3.Bad Taste in Boys by Carrie Harris. This book just sounds so awesome. It sucks that it's out in July or around that time, but it's about zombies and science and high school. Sounds like a fun book. :D

4. The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab. I really love fairytale type things, and Victoria is really nice, and it sounds so cool, and kind of creepy, and me likes creepy things :D

5.Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton. Black magic. In a graveyard. Maggie Stievfater's crit partner. It's a must have!

6.Supernaturally by Kiersten White. Paranormalcy was definitely one of my favourite reads for the year, and the wait for this book is going to kill me! And I know the cover is going to be amazing, when evil Kiersten will show us...

7.City of Fallen Angels. Do I even need to explain this one. And ZOMG the cover reveal is today! *squee*

8.Wildefire by Karsten Knight. Dude, it's about Polynesian volcano Goddesses. 'nuf said.

9.Possess by Gretchen McNeil. This book is about exorcisms, and Demons, and I haven't really read that many books about teens and exorcisms. Also, I hear there is a creepy doll shop scene. Why is it out at tthe end of next year! *weeps*

10.Wither by Lauren DeStefano. i noticed that there was a distinct lack of dystopian on this list, and this book sounds really cool, also Lauren is really nice, and the cover is made of prettiness.

Best YA covers of 2010 (Part 2)

So, last week I did a post on some of my favourite YA covers of 2010, and I only did three, and seeing as there are many, many more awesome covers out there, I thought I 'd do another one and then post about my favourite books for 2010.

So, here are the rest of my favourite 2010 book covers (in no particular order, I can't pick a favourite...)

Firelight by Sophie Jordan

I seriously love this cover. It is so gorgeous, and it just really fits the book. I look at that cover, and I expect Dragons and kissing. We got dragons and kissing ;p

                                                                                                                  Paranormalcy by kiersten White

Dudes, I love this book so so so much. Love it. If you haven't read it yet, why not? Isn't the gorgeous cover enough to make you want to buy it?

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

I  love Cassie and all of her books, but I wasn't to keen on the Mortal Instruments cover. The cover designer for Clockwork Angel made a winner though. Maybe that's just because I have a thing for London... :D

So, they were some of my favourites this year. What were yours?
