Waiting on Wednesday #59

The Wood Queen
Karen Mahoney
February 8th 2012

Donna Underwood is in deep trouble. An ancient alchemical order is holding her accountable for destroying the last precious drops of the elixar of life. Never mind the fact that Donna was acting to free her friend, Navin, from the dangerous clutches of the Wood Queen at the time. But what the alchemists have in store is nothing compared to the wrath of the fey. The Wood Queen has been tricked and Donna must pay. Get ready for all hell - quite literally - to break loose..

I really, really liked The Iron Witch, and Karen is so lovely! Cannot wait for this to come out! :D Donna's such a great character, and I really want to learn more about this Faerie world!

What book are you waiting on this Wednesday?

Top Ten Tuesday: Winter Wishlist

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where bloggers make lists about books and other suitably bookish things. This week we're doing books that we want that come out this Wintertime!

1. A Million Suns by Beth Revis. I loveloveloved Across the Universe, and I simply cannot wait to find out what happens! I dearly hope it won't suffer from second-book-syndrome...

2.  Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver. Cannot wait to find out about Lena and Alex! Though I kind of hope this book is more of a journey about Lena's growth as a character...

3.  Torn by Cat Clarke. I love Cat Clarke, and her debut, Entangled, was excellent! I've heard from people who've read Torn already (lucky buggers) that it's AMAZING. So I'm pretty darn excited. I wish the US would get them! #BritishauthorsFTW

4. Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare. I need it. Now. I hope my pre-order comes soon, and by soon, I mean NOW.

5. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Somebody slap me for being such a bad Nerdfighter... I STILL haven't pre-ordered it! Such a fail... :S

6.  Incarnate by Jodi Meadows. This books cover is utterly FABULOUS. And I'm sure the book will be too ;)

7. Born Wicked by Jennifer Spotswood. This is one of the many awesome looking 2012 debuts coming out soon-ish!

8. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E Smith. This book looks like it might just be one of the most adorable books of the year. I'm big on adorable books.

9.  Hollow Pike by James Dawson. Witchcraft, secrets, MURDER?! Yeah, I'm there. Also another super lovely British author!

10.  Fated by Sarah Alderson. I loved Hunting Lila, and this book sounds so fab! Demon hunting and demons and stuff? Love it ;)

Discussion Post! The Hot Guy (And Why I Want To See Less Of Him)

Okay, so, I know this a discussion post that most of you aren't really going to agree with, but I've been thinking about it for a while, and how much it annoys me, and I just really need to get it all off my chest.

I am really fed up with hot guys in my books. I'll give you a minute to get over you're shock and horror. I know it sounds weird and distinctly un-teenage girly. But I have my reasons, so! The Hot Guy phenomenon is yet another thing I find that is native to the paranormal genre of books, which I like, but have many, many problems with.

First of all, it's completely unrealistic. I know it's not meant to be realistic, and it looks like a stupid point, but let me finish. If every girl in a paranormal book is supposedly so 'unattractive' and generally quite boring and unlikeable, and if they have such little belief in themselves, The Most Popular Guy in their undoubtedly new school would, if this were reality, not instantly fall in a desperate 'eternal love' with them. Regardless of whether they're an Angel or a Vampire.

Second of all, I hate the Hot Guy romance. Again, I know I'm alone in this, but I hate overly romantic guys. Not just on the basis that it's awkward, but because it's patronising. Most of the time, this 'Perfect Guy' is just completely belittling the main character with their affection.  They expect to be able to go about their supernatural business while completely leaving the main girl in the dark, because of course she can't handle the truth because she's just poor widdle girly. Really? I find it difficult to idolise these kind of guys as 'perfect'. I find within many paranormal books that there is a significant imbalance in the relationship, and the guy and the girl are not on equal ground, but it's fine because he's got a nice face or a nice chest? I don't think it's good that a lot of the time they'll rarely even converse with each other throughout the book, that most of the time they will just kiss and talk about how much they 'love each other'.

Thirdly, the fact that we forgive their many, many flaws just because they are physically attractive. No offence, I don't have a problem with people liking hot guys or anything, and I'm not trying to be all hoity toity or anything, I just want to say this. I think it's kind of sad that pretty much anyone with abs, be they fictional, is deemed pretty much perfect. That they can be patronising and belittling and contrived, and that that is essentially our idea of a 'perfect guy'. I've noticed lately that I find it incredibly difficult to fancy any guy in paranormal YA fiction. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's in regards to the fact that they're usually normal, nice guys, that treat the main character/love interest like their equal.

I really want to see some paranormal books with normal guys as the love interest, with awkward heroes and guys who wear glasses, and guys who read comics and have never kissed a girl and are just kind of adorable, instead of chiselled and cheekbony. Nobody said a nerd couldn't be attractive. Why shouldn't he be the Angel, or the vampire, and it not be a funny book? Why shouldn't in all seriousness, he be the romantic hero, that doesn't have cheesy 'eternal love' lines, and doesn't fall in instalove with people and respects his girlfriend the same way she respects him? Because the stereotypical romantic lead is bad for young boys and girls. It makes awkward nerdy boys think that every girl wants a guy with a six pack and a scary, unnatural desperation for the girl (which seriously creeps me out), and it makes young girls think that a hot guy is automatically a good guy, and a collective of teenagers that need a bit of a reality check.

I think the most perfect example (that I've read) about this kind of 'Paranormal' relationship in a real life situation was in Lola and The Boy Next Door. For those of you who've read it, you'll know what I mean. Max. Max is a manipulative jerk who is characteristically similar to a lot of romantic leads, and he is the epitome of what they would be like IRL. He's the kind of guy who uses the idea that they are in some kind of 'real love' as a tool to manipulate Lola, and he's possessive and jealous and everything that I kind of think are the worst traits in a guy. Like, excessive jealousy is never a good thing, right? I love how Stephanie Perkin's took this kind of person into a real life context. And I love how the nice guy won.

So yeah. Please feel free to disagree with me and everything! I don't mean to be rude or anything, or mean about this kind of thing, that's just my honest opinion on the matter at the time being. Please tell me what you think about it too!

*Note: Before you shout at me, I'm not talking about EVERY guy in paranormal, but you know the one's I mean.

Fracture by Megan Miranda Giveaway!

S'up guys! So, as I said, like, 2 weeks ago, I have a spare proof of Fracture by Megan Miranda, and I thought I'd do a little giveaway for it!

By the time Delaney Maxwell was pulled from a Maine lake’s icy waters by her best friend, Decker Phillips, her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead.

But somehow Delaney survived—despite the brain scans that show irreparable damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be fine, but she knows she’s far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can’t control or explain, Delaney now finds herself drawn to the dying, and when she meets Troy Varga, a boy who recently emerged from a coma with the same abilities, she is relieved to share this strange new existence. Unsure if her altered brain is predicting death or causing it, Delaney must figure out if their gift is a miracle, a freak of nature—or something else much more frightening….

Sounds great, doesn't it! I haven't read it myself yet, but I will soon, so  ;)

To enter, just fill out this form. Giveaway is international, and open until midnight GMT December 8th. Good luck! :D

Poison Study Review

Poison Study
Maria V. Snyder
October 1st 2005
Mira Books

Choose: A quick death... Or slow poison...

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear...

So. Guys. I finally read Poison Study. And, if you have been on Twitter in the past 3 days, you will know how much I freaking LOVED this book. Seriously, I did not thing I would like this as much as I did, despite everyone telling me that it was amazing. I know, stupid right?! I think I pretty much loved everything about this book. And I'm converted to Maria V. Snyder. I neeeeeeeeed Magic Study and Fire Study, regardless of whether they're as good as Poison Study or not. And then I need the Glass series, and then I need to read Touch of Power... And I think you get the jist.

Yelena is one of my favourite characters of the year. She's had a lot of crap done to her, and it's clearly affected her pretty badly, but it doesn't really get her down. If anything, it encourages her to stop it from happening to other people. She was so strong! And while she was a little bit hopeless at the beginning, being that she was about to be executed and all, she developed a lot over the book into and strong independent woman.

And Valek. Oh, my goodness, do I love Valek! I probably shouldn't, considering he's 18 years older than me and fictional, but hey ;) I love how he was kind of built up to be the broody, serious type of guy, but that he had way more depth than that, and I loved his relationship with Yelena, and how they were both equals. He didn't condescend her at all, and the progression of it was so natural and just perfect.

The writing style wasn't complex, but it wasn't simple either, it just sort of flowed along with the story, and the descriptions were awesome. For some reason, whenever I go into a fantasy novel, I just kind of expect reams and reams of descriptions about trees and hills, but there was none of that here. I loved the world that Maria created, and how it was fantasy, but not SUPER fantasy, 'cause I don't really get along with that all that well... *stares at Eragon*

The plot wasn't difficult to follow, and while it never really took me by complete surprise (except for that one bit about the Commander. Was NOT expecting that!) I still really, really enjoyed it. And the side characters were wonderful too! I only really didn't like the characters that I wasn't meant to like, which is a good thing, right? Ari and Janco were amazing, and I hope that neither of them die in the next 2 books... That'd KILL ME. They're just so lovely! Mogkan and Bravell were skeevy and creepy and just plain nasty, and their underhanded tactics at trying to take control were sly and malevolent, and they were the perfect villains. I hated them. *shudders*

Poison Study is an amazing book that I can't believe has taken me until now to read! I now desperately need to seek out every Maria V Snyder book ever.

Also, Happy Thanksgiving to all my US followers! *gives you all turkey*

For Darkness Shows the Stars
Diana Peterfreund
June 12th 2011

Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Eighteen-year-old Luddite Elliot North has always known her place in this caste system. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. But now the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress and threatening Luddite control; Elliot’s estate is floundering; and she’s forced to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliott wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she abandoned him.

But Elliot soon discovers her childhood friend carries a secret—-one that could change the society in which they live…or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she has lost him forever.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s PERSUASION, FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it.

For Darkness Shows the Stars sounds awesome! The cover is beautiful, though Persuasion is the only Jane Austen book I know nothing about, so it'd be interesting to read a sort of adaptation first! What book are you waiting for?

The Scorpio Races review

The Scorpio Races
Maggie Stiefvater
October 18th 2011
Scholastic

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

The Scorpio Races was a lot better than I thought it would be. Wait, that sounds really, really bad. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I've never really been big on, like, horses, and horse racing and stuff, so when I first heard about it, I was kinda meh about it. But I liked it a lot, like, a lot a lot. Better than the Wolves of Mercy Falls (but I have only read Shiver...), and I think I liked it more than Lament too. I was kind of preparing myself for it not to be amazing, because I've heard a lot of bad things about it, but I must say that I thought it was great!

I really liked the characters Puck and Sean, and even though it was told in a dual perspective, I didn't get confused. I think it was good to see Sean from the outside and the inside, because he always had a very stoic, calm, indifferent front, and you could never really tell what he was thing, and I think if it had just been told from Puck's POV, it could've gotten a little whiny love story.

Which brings to me to say, I loved the romance! I think Puck and Sean had a really natural chemistry, and I love to see a couple who actually go though a long process of spending time with each other before they start to like each other, y'know? I loved reading the scenes where they would talk and hang out, and I like books where the romance isn't integral to the plot. I like books that hook me enough and make me care enough about the characters that I'm not really that fussed about the romance. But I was really shipping them throughout the book.  I wanted them to get together, but not as much as I wanted both of them to win the races so they could get what they want!

I also really loved the horses. I loved the Capiall Uisce (I think..?) and how they were described, and how vicious they were, but most of all, I loved Dove and Corr. I mean, I really, really loved Corr! Who wouldn't! He's about the nicest evil water horse ya'll are ever gonna meet, and he's so loyal! Gosh, I was tearing up at the end... (it wasn't even sad! But I thought it was going to be) and I kind of secretly ship Corr and Dove too.. I probably shouldn't. Because they're horses and all... But still!

There was the occasional part where I could get a tiny bit bored, but 99.9 percent of the book, I was properly hooked. I loved the tension and the build up for the races, and the small town kind of reaction to Puck being the first girl to enter in the Races, and how Puck reacted and dealt with it, because they were pissing me off! Saying she can't be in the races because she's a girl... *shakes head*

The Scorpio Races was a lot better than I thought it would be, with action and tension and a little bit of romance, and characters and horses that I kind of adore. Also, it's a standalone! *does standalone happy dance* #ilovestandalones

*sorry there's again, no video, but I have filmed one! My internet broke yesterday which is why this is going up today. But I will post it tomorrow! (not that it's interesting... ;p)

Catching Jordan
Miranda Kenneally
December 1st 2011

What girl doesn't want to be surrounded by gorgeous jocks day in and day out? Jordan Woods isn't just surrounded by hot guys, though-she leads them as the captain and quarterback of her high school football team. They all see her as one of the guys, and that's just fine. As long as she gets her athletic scholarship to a powerhouse university. But now there's a new guy in town who threatens her starting position... suddenly she's hoping he'll see her as more than just a teammate.

This book sounds so freaking adorable! And it actually comes out this year! Yay! Though I'm not really into football or anything, this book sounds great, AND it has Simone Elkeles's seal of approval. So. Yeah.

What are you waiting on?

Top Ten Tuesday: Unread Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where bloggers make lists about books and other suitably bookish things. This week we're doing books that have been collecting dust on our selves for ages but we still haven't gotten round to reading!

1. Torment by Lauren Kate. I've had this hanging around for about a year now, and I still haven't got around to it, even though I really liked Fallen!

2. Linger by Maggie Stiefvater. Again, I don't know why I haven't read this yet! Forever came out a while ago, but I just can't get psyched up enough about it...  Might have to reread Shiver... :)

3.  Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler. I won this book way way back, and still haven't read it... I will... AT some point... In the future...

4.  Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen. It is pretty much going to be the same story with ALL of these books... I have about 70 or so hanging around that I could pick from... ;)

5.  An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. Another book I wanted for ages (of course, being a Nerdfighter) and STILL haven't gotten round to reading! I have Paper Towns as well... #badNerdfighter

6. Wither by Lauren DeStefano. I only got this in the summer, and I thought I'd read it straight away I was that excited by it! But I think I just spent the last 5 months staring at it's pretty, pretty cover....

7. Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margie Stohl. I've had this since last year, and I got halfway through, but then some new shiny book came along... *eyes Paranormalcy* and I haven't picked it back up again since...

8. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan... Another one I've had for ages, and tried to read a couple of times, but I still haven't managed to get into it before something shinier comes along so...

9.  Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine. I like this series! But I just look at how long it is, and stare at my copy of Midnight Alley and just think... Do I want to read a 11 book series...?! I mean, I do... But I just never get round to it...

Also, ya'll have ALL seen The Hunger Games trailer right?! We are ALL agreed that it's AMAZING right?! Yes? Good.

Dark Inside review

Dark Inside
Jeyn Roberts
September 2nd 2011
Macmillan Children's Books

Four teenagers on the same road in a world gone mad. Struggling to survive, clinging on to love and meaning wherever it can be found. THE DARK INSIDE is a stunning, cinematic thriller: 28 DAYS LATER meets THE ROAD.
Since mankind began, civilizations have always fallen: the Romans, the Greeks, the Aztecs…. Now it’s our turn.
Huge earthquakes rock the world. Cities are destroyed. But something even worse is happening. An ancient evil has been unleashed, hooking on to weakness, turning the unwary into hunters, killers, crazies.
Mason: His mother is dying after a terrible car accident. As he endures a last vigil at her hospital bed, his school is bombed and razed to the ground. Everyone he knows is killed.
Aries: A school bus, an aftershock and a crash. Pulled out of the wreckage by a mysterious stranger, she’s about to discover a world changed forever.
Clementine: An emergency meeting at the town hall that descends into murderous chaos. Outside the rest of their community encircle with weapons. How can those you trust turn into savage strangers?
Michael: A brutal road rage incident. When the police arrive on the scene they gun down the guilty and turn on the by-standing crowd. Where do you go for justice when even the lawmakers have turned bad?

Dark Inside was amazing. Seriously, I genuinely didn't think I would like this book when I got it in the post in the summer. I was a fool! It was so good! So intense, and creepy, with small moments of humour, but that lingering anticipation that something bad was going to happen was always there.

I think it's pretty safe to say that this book freaked me out. It may just be my inexperience with scary books and stuff, but I've read other people's reviews and it freaked them out too. This book  is SCARY. The crazies/Baggers were, like, just so freaky. This books was a little like a zombie novel, in all of its apopcalypsiness, and the baggers were a little like zombies, only way, WAY worse. Some of them were just mindless killers, but some of them, they were clever. They were pretty much just psychopaths, calculating and evil and the last thing you'd want hanging around in an apocalypse. The worst part was, you never knew who it would be. Trust no one.

At first, I didn't quite get why all of the different POVs were there, and it was a tiny but confusing, but after the first few chapters I got used to it and I grew to like all of the characters. All of them except for one. There were these chapters written from the POV of Nothing, and they were the worse. They were so creepy! And guys, the last chapter. SO. Creepy. And it was even worse because they were the only chapters told from first person! Getting right into the mind of a crazy/bagger/whatever the hell he/she is... *Shudders*

There were small hints at romance, and times when the bad stuff wasn't as prominent, but mostly this book was about survival. It was about getting from A to B without getting torn apart, about not getting dragged out of your house and killed on the streets, about not dying from starvation because it's late Autumn and you can only eat canned goods but you can't get any as all the shops have already been looted. And it's so tense and scary, honestly, I couldn't relax reading it until I finished. I was getting paranoid about crazies waiting for me in back alleys, strolling around the streets. I swear I though some huge ass earthquake was gonna happen and that the apocalypse was gonna begin. That's how caught up in this book I got.

My only concern is for the next book (because there HAS to be a next book!) I really, really, want the danger to still be there. I'm worried that she's going to take the easy way out with no major MAJOR deaths happening, that it will all blow over and all four of them will be fine, because if that happens, I will be PISSED. I hope we don't find out who nothing is, and that it remains a secret, and I hope lots of dramatic and terrible things happen, because if they don't, I will be greatly disappointed...

Dark Inside is a great, scary book that drags you so much into it's world that you'll be checking out your windows for crazies and sleeping with the lights on.

February 8th 2012

We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.
Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.
When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.
This book looks so good! After reading Dark Inside, I'm all up for apocolypses and all that, so can't wait for this one! What are  you waiting on?

Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Were Out Of My Comfort Zone

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where bloggers make lists about books and other suitably bookish things. This week we're doing books that were out of our comfort zone :)

1. The Hunger Games. At the time I read them, I was very much a paranormal girl. I wouldn't touch anything else with a bargepole, but as soon as I started THG, I did not regret it. Opened up the doors to a whole kaboodle of different genres!

2. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. I hate the cover of this book, but everyone told me it was good, so I read it even though I thought it was gonna be a load of crap and all 'girly' and stuff. Yeah. I was an idiot.

3.  Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts. Literally finished this about 10 minutes ago. I thought I wouldn't like it, but I wanted to read a scary book, so I read it... AMAZING. But I may ave to sleep with the lights on tonight...

4.  Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Another one where I thought NO WAY is this book going to be for me! I really don't know myself very well at all... *runs off to go cuddle it*

5.  An Inspector Calls by J. B. Priestly. Does this count because I had to read it for school? Oh well. Totally thought I would hate it (like most books we read for school) but it was such a good play! I loved it!

6. Undead by Kirsty McKay. You never forget your first zombie book. I think this was the book that made me want to read about the living dead. That, and watching Shaun of the Dead about a million times... #yayzombies!

7. Eight Keys by Suzanne LaFleur. I always thought that I was too old for middle grade books, and that I wouldn't like them, but this one really won over my heart!

8.  Graceling by Kristen Cashore. This was the first high fantasy book I really read, and I didn't really get into it... But I really want to try it again at some point!

9.  The Mortal Instruments. These books were out of my comfort zone because I read them at a time that ALL books were out of my comfort zone. So yeah. You can blame them for how I turned out... ;)

10. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. I don't read classics a lot, and I read modern classics even less so it surprised me when I read this, and I really enjoyed it!

What books have you read that were out of your comfort zone but you found you loved/hated?
