Hourglass review

One hour to rewrite the past . . .

For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn’t there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents’ death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She’s tried everything, but the visions keep coming back.
So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson’s willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may change her past.
Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he’s around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should have happened?

Full of atmosphere, mystery, and romance, Hourglass merges the very best of the paranormal and science-fiction genres in a seductive, remarkable young adult debut.

If I could sum up Hourglass in a few words, it would be timey wimey. And awesome. And hot. Did I say awesome? I just really loved the sci-fi aspects, and I totally see where those comparisons to x-men were coming from! It's a really intriguing book and I flew through it, needing to know what would come next.

I loved Emerson! She was pretty bad-ass despite her past, but still was human and vulnerable. She di not suffer from what I am now calling River Song Syndrome (Y'all watch Doctor Who, right? You know who she is right? You know I hate her, right? She too far gone bad-ass that practically perfect at everything and there is no relatabilty factor there. IMO.) And I loved her relationship with Michael at the beginning. When he fist came into it and they were both already fancying each other I was a bit wary, but I'm glad it went how it did. It was like Insta-love, but done really well. If that's possible... Either way, I bought it.

But I must admit, I like Kaleb way more. Even though he's kind of lacking in the hair department... But seriously, I just can't fall for those intense, broody types anymore... I liked Kaleb a lot more. Even though he could be serious, he was funny and flirty and vulnerable at times. I liked Michael, and I thought he and Emerson were good together, but there was this bit near the end and with Emerson's past, I can't help but think Kaleb would be a lot better for her.

The main thing I loved about this book, though, was the plot. I wasn't really that sure what it was about from the blurb and stuff, but as soon as time travel was mentioned, I was like YES.  A million times yes. Though I was slightly apprehensive because Timeless, the only other YA time travel book I've read, fell kind of flat for me. But I needn't have been worried! I loved the whole sci-fi take on it, and hearing about their powers and their time travel theories. I'm kind of nerd, if you couldn't tell... Plus there were loads of twists and turns that I just did not see coming!

The only problem I had with this book, and it's kind of a minor thing, but (according to Emerson) everyone, literally EVERYONE was beautiful. After, like, the 5th pretty person, I was just a bit like... Seriously? Everyone?! Trivial, I know, but it annoyed me a little.

Hourglass is a great debut with an awesome plot and great concept, especially if you're a time travel sciencey geek like me ;)
