Paranormalcy review

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1)Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal. (Goodreads)

Well, the first thing I have to say about this book was that it was Awesome. Evie was a refreshing character, and her narration caught the essence of being a teen, her constant wit making me laugh and her beginning to find herself was important and I could really connect (despite the fact that I'm not exactly as big on pink as her, though I wouldn't mind a Tasey of my own...) And I was so happy that so far, the nice guy is winning! Even though Reth isn't that much of a love interest. In fact, I'm not quite sure what role he's meant to play. I just can't think of him as a villain, though I imagine all this will be explained in the next two books, which I am stoked about.

I really enjoyed the fact that even though the Faeries were imprtant to the plot, that there were so many different kind of paranormals, and I love the way Lend was described as being similar to water. I'd never thought of a Shapeshifter in that light before, and I thought it was really cool and imaginative.

The plot was interesting, and the idea of an 'Empty One' was intriguing. The idea that someone has to steal other peoples souls to feel whole is really cool (though not for the person obviously...) and slightly creepy. And the way she wrote it, it was like souls were almost a drug. And as much as Vivian was kinda a psycho, I hope she isn't unconscious for the next two books. I'd quite like to see her become whole again. Without the souls.

The ending was solid, but left room for a sequel, though I'm just wondering if all the characters she's dropped off will ever return in the story again and where the story will be taken, though it definitely has something to do with the faeries. I loved this book, and it was great to read something which actually made me laugh instead of it taking itself to seriously. There has to be a balance, and that is exactly what this book had. A humourous, fast-paced, exciting book. 5 stars :D
